My solution

One solution is to do nothing, there have been record sales and no real consequences as of yet. If they keep doing what they are doing, yes at some point they will run out of workers at the current turnover rate of 150% annually. However there will be workers for the warehouses for a long time and Amazon can afford the 8 billion dollar annual cost for such a high turnover rate.  The only consequences have been a few fines by OSHA one being around $60,000 and another being $46,000 which are less than pennies for amazon in comparison to their annual profit. Amazon can also appeal the fines and potentially get them lowered or completely thrown out by a court. The other consequence amazon has faced is some states limiting the use of production monitoring using quotas for Employees. The public's outcry hasn't garnered much real change besides a union forming in Staten Island for warehouse workers. However this new union doesn't have the sway yet to demand accountability or chang...

Public's Reaction

Image
The public reaction has been very negative especially since there other scandals involving amazon such as their treatment of their truck drivers and how they treat small business owners trying to sell on the website. Governmental officials have gotten involved including the two OSHA fines mentioned before. Politicians including Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden have called for better treatment of their workers. Some states have gone as far to pass laws addressing work quotas being used in warehouses. "New York isn’t the first state to take such action against Amazon and its peers for quotas. In September, California signed into law a similar bill. And earlier this year, lawmakers in Washington and New Hampshire introduced bills that target warehouse production quotas." The law passed in New York mandated that employers make the requirements for quotas known to employees. The bill also requires amazon and other companies with warehouses to notify their employees if there is chang...

Amazon's response to the Warehouse Scandal

Image
There has not been many of a response by amazon spokespersons. Most of the responses haven been denials or dismissals. Below are some responses by amazon spokespeople to the public outcry as well as governmental intervention. Amazon responded to the investigation, with a spokesperson telling ABC News in a statement: "We’ll of course cooperate with OSHA in their investigation, and we believe it will ultimately show that these concerns are unfounded."  “We’ve cooperated fully, and the government’s allegations don’t reflect the reality of safety at our sites,” Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokesperson, told CNN in a statement Wednesday. “Over the last several months we’ve demonstrated the extent to which we work every day to mitigate risk and protect our people, and our publicly available data show we’ve reduced injury rates nearly 15% between 2019 and 2021.”  Nantel said the company looks forward to sharing more information during the appeal process “about the numerous safety innova...

Introduction

Image
Everyone in the modern world has heard of Amazon and how they prioritize the speed of delivery regardless of size or weight of the product. This practice is bound to cause scandals because the company is  prioritizing speed above all else. This can lead to unsafe working conditions which have been alleged in countless Amazon warehouses and by many delivery truck drivers. Amazon has started to face backlash due to poor working conditions in their warehouses and the backlash continued when little to nothing was done in response.         On January 18 2023 OSHA sent out a news release stating that they had fined Amazon $60,269 for violations found in three of their warehouses in Deltona Florida, Waukegan Illinois and New Windsor New York. The investigation by OSHA found that Amazon workers were exposed to struck-by hazards and other musculoskeletal disorders related to the high frequency that workers must lift heavy...
